Hey
Scott, how did you and Lee Venters get together?
Lee was doing a gig w/ The El Jaye Johnson Trio at a local
establishment here in Wilmington. El Jaye and I had spoken over the
phone, and he invited me to sit in for a tune or two. I figured I
would never be invited back again, so I took out all the stops and
immediately went after the drummer in his trio who turned out to be
Lee. Lee was way reserved at first (wanting to keep his paying gig)
but I eventually wore him out, and he caved in and fired equally
back at me, and well, the rest is history! : ) That initial
gig is actually available on CD. Wow, I cant believe we captured it!
Danny Pera played bass that night, and we went on to do many a gig
as a trio with Lee, myself and Danny.
What happened to
SQV?
SQV was the original name of the band that Lee had come up with. He
was thinking about an SUV and thought that the name SQV (Initials of
my first two names and his last name) was a groovy idea. So I said
sure. We established the name and was going to call the album: SQV,
Without Until, but Lee was doing a bunch of gigs with other bands,
and wasn't always available to play. So we figured we could
rename the band to WITHOUT UNTIL Featuring me and Lee. This way, If
he could not make a gig, I might be able to get a replacement to sit
in. (What the heck was I thinking? Like someone might be able to
replace him?) So there is your answer.
Who is
playing Bass?
Wow what a question. Lee and I have had the honor of playing with
some bad, bad bassists! Gary Craddock, Danny Pera and John White!
Each is an amazing player in his own right! However, currently, Lee
and I have had the honor of playing with 18 year old Taylor Lee. We
originally recorded him on "Voices" on our CD when he was 16. Then
Ethan's Concerto some time later. Taylor is a great smoking
player who grows ever gig we play. I sense, and hope, a lot of his
growth is from playing with Lee and myself. But due to his huge
talent, he is leaving us in August of 2008 for Berklee school of
Music in Boston (Lee's old School). So we are going to be out a bass
player. So all you bass players out there, let us know who you are!
We need a replacement soon!
What is in the
future?
Huh? What is in
the future? The Future! That is why it is called the future! Can I
predict what we will as a band be doing then? Nope. But, do I have
aspirations? Sure! We hope to do some local regional touring to
support the album in the South East. We actually are speaking with
some name Bassists and other musicians to complete the band. We are
discussing the possibility of doing some clinics, NAMM shows and
other events. Please stay tuned to this site for all the updates as
they happen.
