sound" are some of Wilmington’s local greats like:
Gary
Craddock (Organix)
Steve Dyer (Keyboardist Extreme)
Roy Harper (James Brown Band)
Jason Jackson (Soprano Sax Extraordinaire)

Blazing World
Class Jazz/Fusion Drummer Lee Venters teams up with “over
the top” Jazz/Fusion Acoustic/Electric Guitarist Scott Quinn
to create Wilmington’s own “Without Until.” The debut album
entitled: “Without Until Featuring Scott Quinn and Lee
Venters,” is a 69 minute journey that incorporates some of
Lee's best drumming to date! Fans of Lee remember him from
his masterful drum work with The Aquarium Rescue Unit, as
well as his two solo record projects. Lee’s big bad grooves
are all over the album! Drummers will love the double kick
drum work on the rockin “Mistor Hiddy” and his solos during
“Moments” and “Blue Tango” are mesmerizingly musical and
creative!
Scott Quinn’s
Jazz Fusion guitar work is bound to be appreciated by fans
of John McLaughlin, Shawn Lane, and John Scofield! Scott
managed, worked and played with guitarist Shawn Lane for
many years prior to his untimely death in 2003. Scott has
also worked with Al DiMeola, Bunny Brunel, and Jonas
Hellborg just to mention a few. Scott is the author of the
monthly column LIFE BEAT in Wilmington’s The Beat Magazine.
This debut album features 6 original tunes written by Scott
and a “cover” tune written by Glen Velez called “Voices” in
an entirely new musical arrangement.
Fans of Indian, Mid Eastern, Spanish, Western, music &
culture will appreciate the musical diversity of this
special recording. Spanning a
recording period of over 3 years, the record explores new
musical soundscapes, textures, and rhythms.
Joining Scott
and Lee on the record are some of Wilmington North
Carolina's top players! The opening tune “Moments” features
a mid eastern influenced musical romp with bassist
Gary Craddock, sounding like he is maneuvering the
band thru the hot Arabian Desert! The inter play between
Scott and Lee is something seldom heard! Next on the rhumba,
“Morning Dance Suite,” Gary Craddock takes on the Acoustic
Upright duties while 106.7 The Penquin’s Flamenco Café’s
guitarist William ‘Paco’ Strickland joins
Scott for a Spanish guitar romp on “Paco’s Reprise.”
Saxophone player Jason Jackson shines on the
fusion tango, “Blue Tango,” which also features bassist
John White’s (Machine Gun) legendary bottom end
sound. Lee does another outstanding Solo during this piece.
Wilmington’s very own blues legend Charlie Lucas
steps on board next for the funky “Do What?” This “funky
blues tune” features the very hip saxophone style of
Wilmington’s renown Leroy Harper Jr. from the
James Brown band as well as Sax player Jason Jackson! And,
keeping the funk ever flowing is Wilmington’s own El
Jaye Johnson on keys! Next is the rocker, “Mistor
Hiddy.” Again John White takes on bass guitar duties, whilst
keyboard extraordinaire Steve Dyer duals with
Scott in some over the top solos! The only “cover” on the
album is next up, “Voices.” This piece was originally
written by legendary Frame Drummer, Glen Velez. The new
arrangement features Wilmington’s then 16 year old bassist
Taylor Lee with the amazing Steve Dyer again
on keyboards. Scott and Lee battle it out at the end of this
piece in the spirit of John McLaughlin and Billy Cobham!
The final tune on the CD, “Ethan's Concerto” is a 3 part
suite that climaxes with the amazing pianist Kevin
Kolb doing a masterful solo piece. Seth
Trachy’s over the top Saxophone solo performance is
indeed a treat, while Steve Dyer plays all those amazingly
impossible keyboard parts! The record was mixed by Scott and
Lee with local guitar great Tommy Brothers
(Machine Gun) at Audio Genesis. It was then Mastered by
David Pell from Cat’s Imagination! The album’s
cover artwork was done by Wilmington’s own artist R.C.
‘Gil’ Warren from morninggloryvisuals.com. Gil’s
artwork masterfully captures the essence, style, vision,
and direction of the band! Limited run posters are available
of the album artwork which was redone for the poster.
This record is
a very important nod to the musicians of Wilmington and its
musical community.
It is a wonderful thing for so many of this town’s musicians
and artists to be involved in so many ways in the making of
this album.
Scott and Lee are grateful to all who contributed!
